When you were ten, a cool color was your favorite one. However, as you grow up, the term cool takes on a new meaning, especially when it comes to makeup. On the other hand, you also have the option of warm colors. You may wonder if you have the right skin tone to pull off warm colors or if cool colors are only for a nighttime look. Our makeup artist from All Dolled Up has been doing makeup for years, including on-site beauty makeovers and TV makeup, and has the answers.

How to Tell if a Color Is Warm or Cool

Technically speaking, you can tell if a color is warm or cool is based on its location on the color wheel. However, rather than use a protractor, you can often tell just by looking at the color.

As a general rule, warm colors, such as red, orange, and yellow, remind you of the sunshine. When you use these colors to paint a room, they tend to revitalize you and give you a boost of energy.

On the other hand, cool colors make you feel calm and relaxed. Examples of colors in this palette include purple, green, and blue.

Gray, white, and tan all classify as neutral colors, which means you can match them with cool or warm colors, depending on your desired look. However, a neutral hue could fall into the category of warm or cool based on its undertones.

Does Your Skin Tone Determine What Kind of Colors You Should Use?

In a sense, yes, your skin tone can play a role in the colors you should choose. However, our makeup artist wants you to know that you can select colors outside of the ones that match your complexion, especially if you’re going for a new look, need movie or TV makeup, or desire your makeup to match with the accents of your dress.

If you have a skin tone with warm tones, warm tones accent your face best. On the other hand, if you have a complexion with cooler skin tones, a cool color palette suits you best.

Check your veins if you’re unsure of your skin tone. If you have green veins, your skin is a warm complexion. If your veins are blue, your skin is a cool tone.

You could also use the white tee test. With this, you put on a solid white, unstained shirt. Then, look at yourself in the mirror. If your skin is rosy, you have a cool tone. If your face looks yellow, you have a warm skin tone.

Keep in mind that some people have neutral tones, and they can use either a warm or cool palette.

Does the Time of Day Matter With Warm and Cool Colors?

Warm colors remind people of a bright summer day, while cool colors are darker and tend to make people think of the nighttime. A warm tone works well in the daytime. Moreover, a color scheme blends in with the night and doesn’t stand out, making it an excellent choice for late-night soirees.

While an All Dolled Up makeup artist may recommend cool colors, you don’t have to follow this look if you’re geared toward a specific look. Based on your responses, any makeup artist associated with us will help you find a color scheme suited for your skin, the type of event, as well as your preferences.
